What Is IELTS?

IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is a widely-recognized English language proficiency test taken by students, professionals, and migrants. Developed jointly by the British Council, Cambridge Assessment English and IDP, it measures your ability across four key skills:

  • Listening
  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Speaking

IELTS is accepted by thousands of universities, employers, and governments worldwide. If you plan to study abroad (especially in English-speaking countries), work or migrate, your IELTS score will often be required.

What Is Measured / Scoring

Each section is scored from 0 to 9 bands. Your total IELTS band is the average of the four skills, rounded to the nearest half band.

The Listening and Speaking sections are the same for both Academic & General Training. Reading & Writing differ.

Results are valid for about 2 years (check with the institutions or immigration bodies).

How To Prepare for IELTS?

Use official practice materials: British Council / IDP sample tests, mock exams, “Road to IELTS”, “IELTS Ready Premium”

Develop all four skills every week: listening to podcasts, reading academic & non-academic texts, writing essays/letters, speaking regularly.

Time management is key — practice under timed conditions.

Get feedback (tutors or peers) especially for writing and speaking sections.

For paper-based tests, generally 13 days. For computer-delivered, results often within 3-5 days. (Check locally)

Can I retake a section instead of the whole test?

No — you must retake the entire test if you want a higher score.

Do I need to take the speaking test on the same day?

It depends on the centre. Many test centres schedule the speaking test on the same day; some schedule it up to 7 days before or after.
